This text was originally written in Spanish to promote more sustainable sanitation in the reconstruction of the Manabí and Esmeraldas provinces of Ecuador, after the 2016 earthquake. Nonetheless, most of the ideas expressed here would be applicable in many other places as well.

Elaboration of a local action plan on adaptation to climate change for water resources in Slobozia Mare, Cahul

During August-November, 2016, WiSDOM association in collaboration with water quality experts from the Laboratory of Hydrobiology and Ecotoxicology, IZ ASM is implementing a project for the elaboration of a local action plan for adaptation to climate change for water resources. The first stage of the project aimed at collecting background information on the community. During this stage, local documents were consulted; a survey with local population was undertaken on the status of water resources and sanitation in the area as well as the practices of water management in agriculture and management of organic waste. Supplementary, the quality of drinking water was assessed by specialists of the Laboratory of Hydrobiology and Ecotoxicology. Based on this data and a stakeholder workshop to be organized in November, the main adaptive measures to climate change for the use and management of water resources will be chosen and an action plan will be elaborated and proposed for adoption at the Local Council.

The drinking water supply in Slobozia Mare come from artesian wells; these are less vulnerable to the effects of climate change than shallow wells. A survey carried out with 101 people in the community indicated that available water is insufficient, particularly during the dry spells, since the drinking water resources are used competitively also for irrigation. Approximately 1/3 of the respondents indicated they use private wells for drinking and irrigation purposes. At the same time, approximately 70% of the population uses flash toilets with non-isolated septic tanks and pit latrines (100%). During 14 of November 2014 the local actors (local authorities, teachers and pupils) together with members of WiSDOM association and experts on water quality will elaborate an adaptive action plan to climate change for water resources.
